FIELD TRIPS & EVENTS WITH MY STUDENTS
Studying the Branchini Madonna at the Norton Simon Museum
My Early Church History class took a field trip to the Norton Simon Museum where they spent time contemplating Giovanni de Paolo's Branchini Madonna and his Baptism of Christ scene. They pondered, sketched, and prayed with these images in hopes of imaginatively entering into worship with some of our brothers and sisters of the 15th century.

Forgiveness and Healing in Norco Prison

The last couple of Spring semesters I have had the opportunity to take seminary students into Norco prison to help facilitate a 7-week course on Forgiveness & Healing. The interactions my students have with the incarcerated students is amazing and beautiful. Prison ministries have developed and been refined out of these class experiences.

The Summer Institute for Theology & Disability
I had the opportunity to host a panel with some of my former students and friends who are helping the Church think about the whole Body of Christ. Thanks to Travis Case, Terry, Lorraine Williams, Ivonne, Kevin Robertson, Pep, Lisa Joy, and Julie Land for participating on this panel discussion.

Christian Theology Class at the Union Rescue Mission on Skid Row

My Christian Theology Class spent some time at the Union Rescue Mission. After a tour of the facility we spent three hours in the day room playing games and just being with some new friends.

Church History I Class at the Getty Center

Our class spent a Saturday at the Getty Center in Los Angeles to study the Gerard David triptych altarpiece.

Church History II Class at San Gabriel Mission in Los Angeles
Here we are after our tour of the mission and contemplating the complicated, and in many ways tragic, manner in which the gospel was first presented in California,

Church History II Class with Holocaust Survivor Zenon Neumark
Our class had the wonderful opportunity to sit and listen to Zenon Neumark's story and how he survived the Holocaust.

Trip to Israel with some Seminary Students

We had a real interesting time together exploring  Israel/Palestine for 10 days. Oh my, was it hot. The highlight. by far, was getting to spend time with these amazing students.
CO-TEACHING
One of the best aspects of my job is the chance I have to co-teach with my amazing colleagues. In class we stretch each other and provide students a model not only of collegial friendship but also of entertaining theological disagreement.
Professor Robert Muthiah: Every year I get the opportunity to teach GINS 526 Ethics & Worship with Prof. Muthiah of the Ministry Department. In our class, Rob takes us to the church across the street where we practice baptism, weddings, communion, and funerals. He has recently published a book called The Sabbath Experiment
Assistant Professor Janette Ok: Every year Janette and I have taught GINS 546 Gospels & Christology together. She brings unique and insightful teaching on the Gospels to the class as well as a fun sense of humor. Her research is on ethnicity in 1 Peter and the Greco-Roman world and the formation of early Christian identity in its sociohistorical context, as well as Asian American biblical interpretation. She is also a teaching pastor at Ekko Church in Anaheim.
Here is a link to an interview with Dr. Ok on the Junia Project website: http://juniaproject.com/this-is-what-a-leader-looks-like-seminary-professor-edition/
Professor Alice Yafeh: Last year Alice and I had the chance to teach a seminar on the theology of human sexuality. Her own speciality is in Paul and New Testament studies, specifically Paul's sexual ethics in I Corinthians.
Professor Kenneth Waters: Occasionally Prof. Waters and I get the chance to co-teach Gospels & Christology. He always brings a tremendous amount of pastoral insight to our class as he was pastor in the Methodist Church for over 25 years. Prof. Waters is a NT scholar who specializes in Revelation and early Christian apocalypticism.
